Here are the official rules for images in signatures and avatars.

For avatars, they can be up to 100 X 100 pixels in size. They can be of anything, but we encourage pictures of your characer.

Banners in signatures can be up to 500 X 200 pixels in size. That is the MAX! Nothing bigger than that, please. Also, you can't have more than one image in your sig. Unless you want to have link buttons to other sites in addition to your banner.
